   Another name for Hugh was Joseph Maxwell SPIERS.

This is what I learnt from my mother as a child:

Charlotte Middleton married an Irish soldier (Spears) and went with him back
to Ireland. They were very poor. My mother said that Charlotte said her husband took
better care of the family pig, than of his family. My mother said he had to because
their source of income must have been the family pig!

Charlotte left her husband in Ireland and returned to India with the children (Spears) and
sent them to school in Lovedale. Both Louie (Louisa - Ed) Spears and her sister's admission are recorded in the Admission book. Louie married Hiscox, I don't know much about him
except that he worked in the courts (bailiff?). I never met him. Louie was a nurse and I
saw both Louie and her mother (our Aunt Charlotte) in Madras as a child. They lived
very close to Doveton School where my mother was a teacher and I was taken many
times to visit them by my mother as a child. 2


Hugh married Charlotte Matilda MIDDLETON, daughter of William Henry MIDDLETON and Emma Louisa BRADBURY, in 1888 in Chennai (Madras) Tamil Nadu, India.1 (Charlotte Matilda MIDDLETON was born on 18 Aug 1866 in Madras, (Chennai) Tamil Nadu, India 3, christened on 28 Nov 1866 in Madras, (Chennai) Tamil Nadu, India and died in 1936 in Kilpauk, St. Mathias, Madras (Chennai), Tamil Nadu, India.)
