Notes:

Edward John INGRAM was born in Southend-on-Sea in December 1847. His father is shown as John INGRAM, a "Waterman" by trade and his mother as "Betsey" INGRAM formerly HOLDAWAY.

He is first shown in the UK Census of 1851 living at No. 1 Shutt's Cottage with his parents and siblings Isabella, Robert, Mary Ann and Elizabeth, aged 3 years.
In the UK Census (Rochford) of 1861 & 1871, he is shown to be living with his parents John and Betsy INGRAM and his siblings at Shutt's Cottage, (1861) and again at Victoria Place, (1871) in Prittlewell. However he is listed simply as "John" in both schedules. This could be a familiar family name given to the census-taker or an omission or error on his/her part. (Such errors are not uncommon in the registers).
Edward John married Mary Ann Ward in 1872 in Islington (GRO Ref: 1b 427). He is shown in the register to be a "Conductor" (sic) of "official" age living at Milton Place, Southend-on-Sea and Mary Ann is shown as a Spinster, also of "official" age living at Providence Place. Their fathers are shown as John Ingram and Jeffery Ward respectively, both "Mechanics" by profession. It is not clear why the marriage took place in Islington rather than their home parish in Southend.

Addendum (January 2007): The unusual occupation attributed to him and to his father on Edward John's marriage certificate above is finally explained by the following note discovered in the archives of the Essex Record Office: "John Page INGRAM worked on Southend Pier with his son and used to drive the trams along it". (From Rona Langston's "Ingram Family UK/NZ").

In the UK Census (Rochford) for 1881, 1891 & 1901, he is shown to be living with his wife Mary Ann and their children at 6 Alexandra Terrace,(1881 & 1891) and at 20 Cambridge Road, (1901) in Prittlewell. His son Alfred George, (q.v.) is included in the 1881 Census aged 1 and the 1891 Census aged 11 years.

So far, no record of his death has been found.
