His bride is shown as Betsy Holdaway, a Spinster also of "full age".

He first appears in the 1841 UK Census aged 20 years, a "Mariner" by trade lving with his wife Betsy, (also about 20) at Providence Place, Prittlewell, Southend-on-Sea, Essex. They have no children. Also living with them are his widowed mother Isabella, now re-married to George Day and his half-sister Louisa.
He is next shown to be living with his wife Betsy and their first five children, including (Edward) John, (q.v.) at 1 Shutt's Cottage, Prittlewell in the 1851 Census. His age is recorded as about 43 years, a "Waterman" by trade and his place of birth is shown as Southend-on-Sea.
The 1861 Census shows him again at the same address with seven of his children.
He and his family moved to 2 Victoria Place sometime before the 1871 Census. Although his occupation is shown again as "Waterman", he was known to have been operating the horse-drawn trams on Southend Pier with his son Edward John at about this time.
In 1881, he is shown to be living at Vine Cottages aged 62 with his wife Betsy and their two youngest daughters Betsy Ellen and Hannah (Rebecca). Curiously, his occupation is shown as "Carpenter".
