Notes:

Mary Ann LEYLAND, said to be of Scottish descent, was born in Secunderbad, Andhra Pradesh in April 1855. The entry of baptism shows her father as Richard Leyland and her mother as Mary Ann. It is thought she may have been sent "home" to boarding school in England, (or Scotland) for her education. .

Apparently Miss Leyland was sent for by James Bullock for employment as a Housekeeper or, (more likely), as Governess to the five children from his second marriage. According to family hearsay, she responded to an advertisement placed by Bullock in the London Times around about 1875 and took up her duties the following year. James Bullock and and his Housekeeper Miss Leyland subsequently fell in love and were married in 1879. She bore him another ten children. The photograph of her shown on this page was extracted from a wedding, (or formal betrothal group) taken at the time of her daughter Ellen Millicent's marriage to Alfred George INGRAM in 1903.
Mary Ann BULLOCK died in Madurai, Tamil Nadu in October 1909 aged 54, while nursing the wife and children of one of her step-sons and is buried at St. Mary's cemetery in Fort St. George, Madras (Chennai). 5

After the death of her husband James in 1896, Mary Ann lived for some time at Madurai, in the home of her step-son George Charles Bullock who had recently returned to the Madras Presidency from Mussoorie in the Punjab. Evidently George's wife Catherine and their infant daughter Kathleen contracted measles in 1909 and Mary Ann nursed them both back to health. Unfortunately she herself came down with the disease and subsequently developed the early symptoms of cholera. She died of her illness in their house in October of the same year and was buried in St. Mary's Church at Fort St. George, Madras, (Chennai).

Her daughter Jane Maria "Birdie", then about 18 years of age was also present at the time of her death. 6

Mary married James BULLOCK, son of Thomas William BULLOCK and Anna VERDUIJN, on 16 Oct 1879 in Emmanuel Church, South Black Town, (Georgetown), Madras (Chennai) Tamil Nadu, India.1 (James BULLOCK was born on 5 Sep 1834 in Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu, India, christened on 21 Oct 1834 in Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu, India,7 died on 10 Feb 1896 in Bangalore (Bengaluru), Karnataka, India 8 and was buried on 12 Feb 1896 in St. John's Cemetery, (Kalpalli) Bangalore, (Bengaluru), Karnataka, India 9.)
