John BODDINGTON
According to the Register of Baptisms, John was born with two "d"s to his name. As far as we know, he still had them when he married. However, when he began to have children, he mysteriously lost one of them. His children are all recorded as "Ann d. of John Bodington", "Tho. s. of John Bodington" and so on. However when the son Thomas married Anne Greatbatch, (q.v.) in 1685, he appears to have regained the lost "d". There are similar discrepancies and unexplained variations in the spelling of the name elsewhere in the same Registers. John married Joan, daughter of Unknown and Unknown, circa 1648 in Carlton, Bedfordshire, England. (Joan was born circa 1632 in <Carlton, Bedfordshire, England>, died in 1676 in Carlton, Bedfordshire, England and was buried on 11 Dec 1676 in the Church Of St. Mary The Virgin, Carlton, Bedfordshire, England 1.)
It is thought that John BOD(D)INGTON married
Joan UNKNOWN some time between 1643 and 1657 in the Church of St. Mary
the Virgin in Carlton. Parish records for that period appear to be incomplete.
Curiously, there are entries for Baptisms and Burials for the years 1644 and
1645, but no Marriages. The next entry in the Register reads: "Anno Dni 1657.
Tho. Great-Bach, Rector de Carlton, May 1, 1657". The first marriage
recorded after this entry is for April 12th, 1658. |
