James Colbert INGRAM
Notes:James Colbert was the youngest son of Thomas
INGRAM, proprietor and owner of the afore-mentioned Warm Baths near Southend
Pier. After a successful career as a Baker and Confectioner, (from about 1870
to1882), he went on to become an enterprising and highly respected Land Agent
and Auctioneer. He was elected to the Borough Council and became an Alderman
sometime in 1889. He was also a Justice of the Peace, a Magistrate and was four
times elected Mayor of the borough of Southend-on-Sea - (1901-02, 1907-08,
1908-09 and 1910-11). On completion of his third term as Mayor and Justice of the Peace, he was granted 'Igitur Laudata' by the Southend Borough Council. A full colour, silk screen copy of the parchment presented to him can be viewed here. He remained in civic duty for the rest of his life, and
was Returning Officer for Pier Ward at the time of his death. Events:1. He resided at Grove Terrace, Southend-On-Sea, Essex in 1851-1861. 2. He worked as a Master Baker in 1871-1881 at Marine Parade, Southend-On-Sea, Essex. 3. He appeared on the UK Census, Rochford District, Essex in 4 Marine Drive, Southend-On-Sea, Essex, England. 4. He resided at Westonia House, Weston Road, Southend-On-Sea, Essex in 1891. 5. He resided at Argyle House, Westcliff, Southend-On-Sea, Essex in 1901. 6. He was elected to the Borough Council of Southend as Alderman in 1898 and served as a councillor until 1901 when he was elected Mayor for the first time. 7. He was elected to the Southend Magistrate's Bench and appointed Justice of the Peace in 1903. 8. He was elected Mayor of Southend-on-Sea for the second time in 1907. 9. He was again elected Mayor of the Borough of Southend-on-Sea in 1908 and on completion of his term in 1909, was granted "Igitur Laudata " by the Southend Borough Council. 10. He was elected Mayor of Southend-on-Sea in November 1910-1911 for the fourth time. 11. He was the Returning Officer for Pier Ward, Southend-on-Sea until 1922. James married Elizabeth ELLIOTT, daughter of John ELLIOTT and Sarah, circa 1869 in Southend-On-Sea, Essex, England. (Elizabeth ELLIOTT was born in 1850 in Southend-On-Sea, Essex, England, christened on 27 Feb 1850 in Southend-On-Sea, Essex, England, died in 1884 in Southend-On-Sea, Essex, England 6 and was buried on 9 Jun 1884 in Southend-On-Sea, Essex, England 5.) James next married Hannah M. CROWHURST, daughter of John CROWHURST and Elizabeth, circa 1886 in Southend-On-Sea, Essex, England.1 (Hannah M. CROWHURST was born circa 1850 in Newington, Surrey, England,7 died in 1934 in Southend-On-Sea, Essex, England 8 and was buried on 18 Dec 1934 in Southend-On-Sea, Essex, England 5.) |
